Specification
White, finely crystalline powder with characteristic odor after SO2, soluble in water. Aqueous solution reacts slightly acidic. By treatment with air moisture is slowly cleaved gaseous SO2 occurs while the oxidation to sodium sulfate is made. By treatment of acids and heat is produced sulfur dioxide. Sodium metabisulphite reacts violently with oxidizing agents. When mixed with sodium nitrite reacts strongly exothermic. It acts reductively, bleaching and preserves.
