Magnesium chloride (MgCl2) is a white, hygroscopic, which forms several hydrates with the general formula MgCl 2 • x (H2O). This compound is a typical halide ions, which are very well dissolves in water. Magnesium chloride is obtained from sea water. Anhydrous magnesium chloride is used to produce magnesium metal.
